A LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE Leaders tend to lead utilizing one of these two practices primarily:
Neither really works well on it's own, which is the root cause of why leader-relationships suffer and struggle.
If I am about RELATIONSHIP, I may let you get away with things, not worry about missed deadlines or minimally not hold people accountable. If you hold me accountable, you must not be my friend?!?! If I am about ACCOUNTABILITY, I likely don’t seem likeable and therefore come across as a hard-case nobody likes with few friends.Ideally of course,
The real leader learns to practice both effectively! They practice both by being highly relational while ALSO holding people accountable. Expectations are always clear with consensus / Accountability is expected with no damage to relationship since all is clear from the beginning (with everything we do).
Most believe you can’t be both - RELATIONAL and ACCOUNTABLE! The real leader is the one who comes to understand ‘yes you can be both’ and it actually works amazingly well.
STUFF GETS DONE, WE MAKE MONEY and RELATIONSHIPS FLOURISH and GROW!!!
WE ARE THE WORLD ( https://youtu.be/M9BNoNFKCBI )
What a great message and song from another time, for this time! We need so much of this message now all over this freaking crazy world. As you listen to this old tune (plz do & plz consider how you contribute or not on a daily basis) - good or bad, leading or helping, adding or subtracting, etc?. The video and wording brought these thoughts to mind:
The first thing I spot is all those differences, diversities, black & white faces 'together' doing something beautiful. Some lyrics that grabbed me how each phrase, piece or word is a message to each of us right now:
..."...Pretty pumped to share new book titled 'PEOPLE WASTE' ...a leaders workbook/guide & resource focused on the cost of ineffective relationships among management in the workplace!
"...The C-level / Senior Leader’s world is filled with critically important relationships – to the leader & to the organization!
These relationships can be ‘bad’ or ‘good’ - that’s a matter of choice. Real leaders realize they can cause a good relationship with anyone if they choose to (and yes, whether the other person is committed or not).
Accepting a bad relationship and living with it ‘day after day after day’ is insanity. This is how maintain-ers and followers exist.
The leader’s ultimate success, future and happiness depends on these relationships being ‘good’. Those down below who report to the leader depend on these relationships being ‘good’ as well.
The Exec’s people should not have to suffer due to ‘bad’ relationships of their boss up above.
Allowing ineffective relationships is not leading - that’s managing …that’s maintaining. Building, fixing, understanding and nurturing relations is the leader’s job, …and that’s leadership. This is also culture-building which leaders are responsible to create.
This is all obviously about improving not only one’s leadership-sphere and world, …but improving one’s life in general!....."
In this book I go deep into the LEADER'S RELATIONSHIP SPHERE utilizing what I refer to as (RVPs) - Relational Value Points.
‘Bad’ relationships = People Waste!
