HIDDEN CURRICULUM -or CULTURE!
( Leadership Moment # 52)
A recent involvement with an academic organization and its leader revealed this concept (and phrasing) of a cultural reality. This is something every organization, every leader, every teacher and everyone in a management role needs to ‘GET’!
In their academic environment the issue of a ‘hidden curriculum’ was being pondered. My dialogue with this leader led me to some interesting thought; specifically regarding its application to any leader and any culture. Here’s the question, “What is your Hidden Curriculum?” For them this was all about looking past how great we might be in teaching people within our ‘curriculum’, but what hidden stuff was being conveyed (taught)?
What are the signals you/we are sending as leaders or which the organization is sending to people unintentionally and ignorantly? Despite what a great product we produce or what great service we provide our customers; how are we doing with ‘customer service’ to ourselves? What are internal & external customers actually getting from our hidden curriculum?
Please before you jump to some worn out thing (advised by worthless consultants / tried by program-focused managers), such as ‘let’s all make sure we walk around and say ‘hello’ to everyone every morning”. That is so transparently UN-real and fake – that is just more HIDDEN CURRICULUM messaging we are doing with people. The message?.......
So what is your HIDDEN CURRICULUM? What are you/we ‘teaching’ & modeling as we wander around? I will not attempt to tell you yours, but I’m betting my list resembles your workplace, team or organization (to some degree anyway). Here are just a few that very quickly came to mind as I thought of my past 20 years in cultures doing Leadership Development work:
Paul - Dr., President Emeritus, new friend & insightful Leader - thanks for sharing/provoking another way of thinking about LEADERSHIP & CULTURE. This wonderful man & his wife hosted me during a recent mission trip to the seminary in Guatemala City.
I hope you will grasp this and go ‘UNCOVER’ some of your HIDDEN CURRICULUM and expose it………
Take good care of You & Yours, Booker
FYI: Heading to GUATEMALA for a short mission trip with/thru my church!
Returning on Oct 14, ...if the GOOD LORD wills it so :)
I so hope to learn something(s) amazing about ___, grow ME and have my eyes opened in some way that will make me a better helper and maybe Servant Leader going forward.
Hope all enjoy the autumn leaves turning just now and please ensure the Royals win this first series so I can watch them sweep through Toronto and St Louis - just like back in '85!!!
So we have to kick this off with this great song for you & for me my friend! CLICK HERE
It is a great tune and words reflecting on how good IT (living life) is IF our perspective, choices & attitudes are aligned (which of course is primarily ALL dependent on us huh?)
It is also a matter of intentionally taking the time to pause, reflect & think. Find a way to plug time into your rat-race for this.
This is important for us all as we busily DO OUR STUFF. I coach to this with leaders as well, "are you taking the time to BE A LEADER, see the big picture, clear your mind, work on what you should be working on; are you leading or just doing stuff, etc?"
For each of us, are we taking time to do the stuff that makes YOU be YOU (the significant stuff)? Let me encourage us all here to ponder (as you listen to this song again) -- think of YOU and your...
OKAY so now get back to your stuff but first plug into your calendar time to come back to reflecting again soon, regularly........
